Goals & Projections :

As District 5 Councilperson, I will encourage economic/business development while at the same time work to preserve our natural resources and quality of residential life, thus allowing continued enjoyment of our community.  To achieve this goal, I will work with District 5 residents to develop a strategic plan to address the following topics:

1. The implementation of sound zoning and building guidelines, in conformance with City regulations, that do not unnecessarily restrict commercial/residential development, but preserve the desert and garden grove characters of our neighborhoods;

2. The provision for an attractive, yet sensible, method to incorporate the unincorporated areas;

3. The enhancement of the benefits of such economic engines as Falcon Field, Boeing and other industries and the completion of the Red Mountain Freeway while, at the same time, securing and preserving the quality of our suburban neighborhoods by limiting noise, congestion, crime and blight;

4. Continued access to our natural desert environment via the enhancement and development of a trail system while preventing destruction of that environment;

5. The utilization of local educational resources available through the Mesa Public Schools, charter schools and Red Mountain Community College, not only to further the education of our children, but to serve as a resource for research and study to enhance the quality of life in District 5 and throughout Mesa; and,

6. The development of strategies to ensure adequate public safety and other city services in the face of limited budgets.

To develop a comprehensive plan to achieve the above goals, I will begin work, as soon as I am elected, to plan a meeting, to be held no later than September, 2008, of such leaders in District 5 as HOA presidents, block watch captains, businesses, religious and educational leaders and governmental representatives, as well as other interested residents, to identify, prioritize and strategize the implementation of action plans to address these and other important issues.

I don’t have all the answers to the issues, but given my experience in law, government and with community organizations, I can ensure that the above properly focused gathering of groups and individuals, supplemented by municipal, county, state and even federal resources can continue the progress to enhance our quality of life in District 5.

As a positive by-product, this process of involvement of the entire community of District 5 in identifying issues and recommending solutions will serve to galvanize participation with and encourage respect for our municipal government and its representatives.

The above described activity is, of course, in addition to the performance of my duties to the City of Mesa as a whole.
